THE TRAGIC FLAW OF KING LEAR

The Tragic Flaw of King Lear

Hello my dear Freshmen

I am really impressed by King Lear's angry speech once Cordelia dares to confront him with her simple straight and abridged speech of how she loves him.

King Lear: let it be so; thy truth then be thy dower:
For, by the sacred radiance of the sun,
They mysterious of Hecate and the night,
By all the operation of the Orbs
From whom we do exist and cease to be,
Here I disclaim all my paternal care,
Propinquity and property of blood,
And as a stranger to my heart and me
Hold thee from this forever. The barbarous Scythian,
Or he that makes his generation messes
To gorge his appetite, shall to my bosom
Be as well neigbhoured, pitied, and reliev'd,
As thou my sometime daughter. (King Lear, Act I, ScI 107-119)

Be wary that King Lear loves by his ears, and this is his TRAGIC FLAW. Lear adores flattery and like many kings he cannot live without it. Cordelia pays a high price for her candid answers; Lear deprives her of everything, claiming that truthfulness will be her share. Then, Lear, driven by his rage, swears by many deities: the sun, Hecate who is a Greek Goddess of Crossroads or the Goddess of earth, sea and sky. She is so powerful by her time and respected by every other God.

  4. King lear feels that he becomes old man and he want to retire in his power and his kingdom,it is very difficult. So king bring a map to divided his realm to 3 parts but King Lear, has atragic flaws ,he loves flatter ,sweettalk and compliment, and (Lear)has three daughters .Goneril the oldest one.Regan the second daughter and Cordelia the youngest daughter, she is the apple of his father`seye and sweetest one to his heart.
(King lear)asked his daughters about the extant of their love for him and he makes the judgment ears like his eyes, because he loves flatter as all kings ,So the two old daughters claimed that they love him more than every thing in the world .Cordelia the youngest daughter disobey this talk and speaks temperate and honor which annoys him, she said"my heart in to my mouth Accoding to my bone, nor more nor less" (lear)also error when he thinks that the little speech did not evidence any thing,in his anger he deprives her and divided the kingdom between the two others daughters, this is unfrair treatment. There is a conversation between Kent and Glouceter where we learn that the King plans to divide his kingdom .
Two of whom are married and the youngest has two suitors (The Duke of Burgundy)and (The King of France )Gloucester has two sons,Edger his heir, and Edmund the younger son who is illegitimate,Gloucester reveals that both his sons share his affections.(KING LEAR)calling loudy to his oldest daughters Goneril and her husband "THe Duke of Albany, and REgan and her husband The Duke of Cornwall and finally Cordelia and her suitors are also present but they wait outside.King lear announces that he is tired of ruling his realm and because of his advanced age he intends to divide his kingdom in to 3 parts, based on his daughter`stestimonies of love for their father. The oldest daughters fawn their father,he decided to disinherit "Corelia" and split the kingdom between (Goneril and Regan)
The king of France impressed by(Cordelia`s steadfastnes, takes her as queen of France and he is astonished at this news for it was well known that (Cordelia)was her father`s favorite .The kong of France acknowledge (Cordelia`s accepts her as his bride. As(Cordelia)leaves, she is anxious about her father`s welfare, she knowns her older sisters are glad to see their younger sister depart.
Lear is surrounded by many who love and honor him.The Earl of Kent recognizes Lear`s folly and tries to advise his King to spare(Cordelia)the banishment .Kent makes his testimony to the King. One of the main themes of the play is the struggle berween natural and basic instincts. This struggle will destroy family ties and violate the commen laws of society.

is it right or wrong?Dr-Hani ,what is your opinion?

  9. Analysis of the quotation
King Lear loves flattery so much & loves by his ears.so,when his daughter "Cordelia" says the truth & does not flatter him ,he becomes so angry with her , forgets his love for her& swears by all the greatest things in the whole world such as ,sun ,sea & orbits ,etc.......... that she is no longer his daughter ,he does not recognize the blood_relationship beteen them & does not love her at all .Then he deprives her of everything& kicks her out of his kingdom
