Sonnet XVIII
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometimes too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm’d;
And every fair from fair sometimes declines,
By Chance or nature’s changing course untrimm’d;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee
How can you analyze a Shakespearean poem?
q First, read the poem more than once in a loud voice and try to understand every part of it.
q Attempt to mark the speaker in the poem and to whom is he/she speaking? Determine the theme of the poem. Focus on the tone, is it happy or sad?
q Get a dictionary and look up the difficult words and write down their meanings. If you cannot understand the meaning in English refer to the Arabic.
q Read again for the last time before you begin to write down some notes.

ReplyDeleteWilliam Shakespeare began his poam with a question when he said (Shall I compare ...)
Shakespeare wanted to compare between the extant of his love for his girl friend and his love for Summer.He choosed Summer because it is the most beautiful and the best season of the year in England ,it season is warm cloudy and nice it is not as Summer in Areb countries like Egypt ,it is dusty,hot,sunny and dry(As a dry as abone )The girl friend is more perfect than beauty of Summer`day
Shakespeare started to remember the main idea in his poam it is (courting his girl friend )and he described his beloved ,she is a weetheart and her love is straight ,behaving in calm and controlled way like idiom (Keep your temperate with some body )
He has a great love to his girl frienf .She is all thing in his life
Some times,the strong winds shocks the trees especially (buds).Shakespeare described the (buds) like his girl friend because his girl is thin ,smoth,light,sweety,and sentiment and she is effected by every thing idiom(take the rough with the smoth)Summer is fletting ,it means runs queckly -In fact-the happy times goes fast with his sweetheart but you have (A new lease of life)We note that the tone of deep-sadness
She has a beautiful eyes ,when she looks to heaven in front of the sun ,her eyes shines .Because she has a fantastic fair skin ,she effected to sa=omething by bright of the sun (A fairly or squarly)
Shakespear send a warm massage to his beloved he explains the beauty will fade/not eternal/mortal in the end but your love will still and always continues .If her beauty fade like Summer .I still love you for ever and your love will never die never end .Your love always life ane eternasl in my heart (Women trying to look eternally young)Summer`glody may end but his girl will not and he said if I can breatg and I can see so I have a live means you are my life and Ican five you all my life as a gift for you .
Dr-hani please tell me your opinion and is it right or wrong?Thank you .
please try to back team work it is avery intellegent idea
ReplyDeletetheli e assignment of king lear. kinglear decides to relinquish the responsibilities and the business of the kingdom and divide the kingdom between his three daughters.king lear loves sweet talks and this his tragic flaw .he wants his daughters to tell him how much' they love him and as long as he hears form hisdaughters ,he will grants them.goneril ,regan and cordelia are king lear daughters and heioves them,but cordelia is the youngestand the apple of his father eyes.goneril and regan prais king lear with avery lovely talks and tell him that their love to him is so great than words can express and if they marry,they will love him all.but cordelia,has not aflattary tongue so she refuses to prais her father and she says to her father that ,her husband shall carry half of her care and duty. king lear reaches the top of his rag from her so he cast her away from his kingdom and refuses to give her the dowry.then,he swears by many deities to treat her as astrang and he says that ,she does not deserve his sympathy or his help so he gives her share to her eldest sisters as he thinks her plainness as apraide.
ReplyDeleteshakespeare starts his sonnet by asking his beloved whether he can make acomparison between her and summer in Britain .we should know that summer in Bretain is the most beatiful season.but he prefers his beloved beacouse she is very nice .he mentions summer toshow how his love for her is .and he warns her from the direct beams of the sun becausethat affects her badly.he describes her beauty as an immortal thing.and tells her that death cannot be close to her.he entions that his poetry is the only thing which makes her mortal and last for ever because when people red it they will know that he loves her more than anyone loves his beloved.and that reflects his ingenuity.(and I thank you to encourage me) Mahmoud Faruk
ReplyDeleteThe function of the fool in this play ;
ReplyDeleteThe fool is one of the most famous characters in the play ,his comic asides often reveal the very foolishness of lear`s action.Hiswords are often ironically the only sourcef wisdom ,coherence and insight in lear`s pathetic entourage.The remarks of the fool have very important function . themood of
sadness in this play .the second is to make king lear sorry and depressed for himself.The fool have a good deal of freedom to speak on any thing and to comment on persons and events without any restraint and introduc
e a comic relief in play. the fool is aprofessional jester who tells jokes to laugh persons
,
The fool`s Attachment to cordelia;-Immediately after leaving cordelia her father`s kingdom when her father divided his kingdom between his two daughters and deprived cordelia from her wealth ,the fool had hided from the castle of Gorneil .when Gorneil asks one of his knights where his fool is , he says that he has not seen since Cordelia`s departure to france. this situation shows that the fool was attached to Cordelia and he became sad and depressed after her daparture from the kingdom.the fool is not different to the persons around him.

ReplyDeleteHello Dr,Hany.
ReplyDeleteWho is the Fool?
Fool is one of the most famous character in the play ,his comic relief often reveal the very foolishness of Lear,s actions ,his words are often ironically the only source of wisdom.
The Fool teaches Lear several riddles.
THe Fool criticizes Lear,s foolishness with his daughters.The Fool attachment to Cordelia:Since the youngest daughter Cordelia going in to France,the Fool has much pined a way .The Fool shows in Shakespeare`s play as a madman or a beloved one,when we look at the words ,we see the Fool tells Lear virtually the same thing in this play(show his foolishness)
The Fool loves Lear as much as any one in the play, save for his youngest daughter Cordelia .
The Fool knows Lear`s only mistake is not accepting Cordelia`s expression of love .
The Fool is devoted to his master,and remains loyal to him .He suffers the cruelty of the elements in the company of his King without complaining .The Fool is a slave to habit like any body else in this world.He has been enjoing unlimited freedom of speech.
Hello ,Dr ,Hany
ReplyDelete(Gloucester:These late eclipses in the sun and moon portend no good to us:though the wisdom of nature can reason it thus and thus............)
Dr.Hany,this is my paraphrase in this part, I do not know if this Ok or not?
This part explains to us the relationships between the father and his son,such as the relationship between Gloucester and his sons,it is the very bad because Edmund th bastared gives to himself a bad business and writes himself down,his religious honostly in this repect is admirable .
Edmund whom he has just deluded with a forged story of his brother Edger`s designes against his life.This is one picture of the bad relationship .
Then when Gloucester has been blinded by Regan and Cornwall for his traitorous acts in helping Lear,this is unnatural behaviour happens among the friends So,Gloucester sees the love become cool between the people because it is based on nothing,no family,no love,no friends.
Glousester sees the happy times are gone with the beautiful past but now there is only plots,wars and hates to arrive the aims.
Gloucester described this action:the strange depravity of the times from the late eclipses in the sun and the moon.
